LK House
Mahis, Jordan 2012
Area: 540sqm

A proposal for a single family house located in Mahis, a rural mountainous area north west of the capital Amman, the project draws its inspiration from the traditional vernacular courtyard house. While three of the four masses are joined together to define the central courtyard-garden, the fourth mass breaks this arrangement to open the house towards the two main axes of the surrounding views, south and east.
In response to the hilly terrain of the site, the house is anchored within the natural slope and connects to a second upper garden, creating a continuity between the land and the internal spaces of the house. Visual connection with the land and the surroundings is further achieved with a roof garden that offers a panoramic view of Mahis.
The specific arrangement of the masses in relation to one another is informed by adjacencies of the programme. The configuration of the rooms varies between inward and outward looking rooms with respect to the courtyard: each room has a different orientation and offers a different atmosphere that makes use of natural light and outward connections.
